According to my local gear installer, the most common causes for a leaky front axle seal are (in no particular order): (1) a bad seal (unlikely if this is your second leaky seal); (2) a nick in the seal; (3) the axle tube is bending under load; (3) overfilling the differential; and (4) improper installation (see Rob5589's post).My 89 ck 1500 z71 stepside, 95 2500 ext cab z71, 98 z71, 02 avalanche all leaked from diff like that. Had first 2 repaired only to leak soon after. Change diff fluid semi-annually and forget the seals. Avalanche had bearings gone on front diff carrier also but @ 200000 miles. In my case, the spider gears were breaking apart and small chunks of metal ate away at the seal. The dealer rebuilt the rear diff and replaced the seals under my MaxCare lifetime warranty.
